Mccormick recalls spices over salmonella risk

Play all audios:

McCormick & Company Inc. issued a voluntary recall of four of its seasonings sold under the McCormick and Frank's RedHot brands because they may be contaminated with salmonella,

which can cause severe infections in older adults. Although no illnesses have been reported, routine testing by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found that the spices may be

contaminated with the potentially dangerous bacteria. The four recalled products are: • McCormick Perfect Pinch Italian Seasoning (1.31 oz. bottle) • McCormick Perfect Pinch Italian

Seasoning (2.25 oz. bottle) • McCormick Culinary Italian Seasoning (1.75 lbs. bottle) • Frank's RedHot Buffalo Ranch Seasoning (153g bottle) The seasonings were shipped to stores in 32

states between June 20 and July 21. Retailers that sold the items include Walmart, Target, Kroger, Publix and Meijer. See product details below, including UPC numbers and “best by” dates

listed on the recalled bottles. The affected products were also shipped to Canada and Bermuda. McCormick has alerted grocery stores that carry the items to remove them from store shelves.

Customers who purchased the seasonings are asked not to return them. Instead, they should throw them away and contact McCormick Consumer Affairs (800-635-2867, weekdays, from 9:30 a.m to 8

p.m. ET) for a replacement or refund. STATES WHERE RECALLED SEASONINGS WERE SOLD SYMPTOMS OF A SALMONELLA INFECTION Infections caused by salmonella bacteria lead to about 26,500

hospitalizations and 420 deaths in the U.S. annually, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates. Tainted food is the primary cause of these illnesses. Those who contract

salmonellosis, the intestinal infection caused by the bacteria, typically experience diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. In severe cases, the infection can spread from the intestines to

urine, blood, bones, joints, spinal fluid or the brain. Symptoms usually begin six hours to six days after infection and last up to seven days. But in some instances, symptoms appear weeks

after infection or symptoms persist for weeks, according to the CDC. Infections are diagnosed with a lab test. Although most people can recover without antibiotics, one is recommended for

anyone with a severe illness. Antibiotics are also recommended for infected adults older than 65 (or over 50 if an underlying condition such as heart disease is present), infants and those

with weakened immune systems. SPICE RECALL Here are product details for the recalled McCormick and Frank's RedHot seasonings. 1. McCormick Perfect Pinch Italian Seasoning (1.31 oz
