People love celebrating the Fourth of July, in part because it often involves relaxation with family and friends, fireworks, and celebrations in a park, on the beach or in a backyard.
Wherever you are, you’ll want a festive and comfortable atmosphere. If you’re on a budget, dollar stores offer a wide range of stylish decorating items that won’t break the bank. “Seasonal
decor in general is such a flash in the pan from year to year,” says do-it-yourself YouTuber Whitney Cernak, a self-professed dollar store fanatic and blogger at Whiskey & Whit, a
website for home-decorating and crafting enthusiasts. “You don’t want to pump a ton of money into something that will only be up a few weeks or months in your home. Doing it on a budget
makes it a little easier.” As usual, this year’s holiday home decor theme remains red, white and blue in various designs, with most offerings priced between $1 and $6 at popular retailers.
“It’s always fun to refresh your decor with the season’s latest trendy designs,” says Katie Ellison, a spokeswoman for Dollar General. Here are 10 ideas for dollar store items that will add
a patriotic flair to any gathering. 1. FLAGS AND MORE What’s more patriotic than the American flag? Dollar stores are a good place to find handheld, pole-mounted and hangable options
starting at $1.25. You’ll also find patriotic banners, bunting and bows at the same price point, as well as stars and stripes on many products — from napkins to hanging signs. Not sure where
to start or only have a few items to decorate with? “Your best bet is to focus on your most lived-in room,” Cernak says. “Add touches to your living room, entryway, or back patio or deck to
get the most out of your efforts.” 2. LIGHTING If you plan to celebrate in the evening, LED lights provide an enticing, soft glow. For $1.25 at Dollar Tree, check out battery-powered LED
lanterns in red and blue, star-shaped LED tabletop tea lights and solar-light yard stakes (a small solar panel collects sunlight during the day so they light up at night) to illuminate
walkways, flower beds or seating areas. Family Dollar also offers decorative solar-powered lanterns starting at $5. Courtesy Whitney Cernak 3. YARD DECOR Many people celebrate July Fourth
outside, so make your yard as inviting as you would the inside of your home for a party. For a bit of whimsy in your yard or on your front porch, put up colorful pinwheels ($1.25 at Family
Dollar), add patriotic pickup-truck garden stakes ($1.25 at Dollar Tree) or use red-white-and-blue torch mason jars that can be filled with citronella fuel to keep bugs at bay ($4 per pair
at Dollar General).
