A recent AARP survey of South Carolina registered voters ages 50-plus found that a full third believe it is extremely or very likely that they, or someone they know, may lose health care

coverage due to cost or job loss.  Across party lines, these voters overwhelmingly consider Medicaid an important safety net for themselves and their fellow residents and express strong

support for expanding access to those who earn less than $18,000 per year. Favorability toward state lawmakers appears to mirror support for Medicaid expansion, with nearly two-thirds of

South Carolina voters saying they would be extremely or very favorable toward a lawmaker who voted to expand Medicaid health care to South Carolina residents who earn under $18,000 a year.​

METHODOLOGY The South Carolina Medicaid Expansion survey was conducted by American Directions Research Group (ADRG) among registered voters of South Carolina age 50+. The survey collected

the opinions of South Carolina registered voters about access to affordable health care coverage and their views on expanding Medicaid health care coverage to low-income residents in their

state. The telephone survey interviews averaged 10 minutes in length and were conducted in English by ADRG from June 21, 2021 to June 30, 2021.  Data were collected using a registered voter
