Rotary president-elect Margaret Taylor says the BDN toy drive is an example of a healthy community partnership that she is proud to be a part of. When she takes up the president position at

the Bega Rotary Club, Mararet Taylor wants to show that Rotary is more than just the barbecue.

having been nominated by her fellow club members.

She is due to take up the position in June next year for the 2018 and 2019 period. 

“If you’re part of an organisation, you need to take responsibility when the time comes,” Ms Taylor said. 

A major goal during her presidency is to build a strong alliance with the local business community. 

As former chair of the Bega Business Council and a member of the Bega Chamber of Commerce, Ms Taylor understands the need to build relationships with business to increase community

engagement. 

“I can see there is capacity for change, and I’d like to see that take place,” she said. 

One example is Bega Rotary’s involvement in the Bega District News Christmas toy drive, concluding this week. 

Bega Rotary has aided the effort by delivering advertising and promoting the toy drive among businesses and the community. 

“It’s an example of a healthy community partnership,” Ms Taylor said.

“The toy drive fits the Rotary philosophy that asks, ‘is it fair for all concerned?’”

Ms Taylor said Rotary has a social conscience.

“The toy drive is a demonstration of hearts opening and a willingness of people to give at a special time of year,” she said. 

“Giving is what Christmas is all about, so the joy of Christmas can be felt by many, in giving we receive.”

Ms Taylor said Bega Rotary was always looking for new causes or projects to support. 

With a diverse membership of 25 people, the club is able to capitalise upon a range of skills that can be shared with the community. 

Currently, Bega Rotary runs youth leadership programs and RYDA driving lessons for around 400 high school students.

Their landmark event, the Rotary book fair, recycles funds into the community by recycling books. 

“It is a wonderful way to demonstrate the ethos of Rotary,” Ms Taylor said. 

As she prepares for her new role, Ms Taylor said the door is always welcome to new members.
