A COIN EXPERT HAS WARNED UK HOUSEHOLDS OVER A 'RARE' 2P COIN WHICH COULD BE WORTH UP TO £1,000 14:55, 03 Jun 2025 It is not unusual for UK households to have the odd copper coin or
two lying about, but did you know some of those could be worth up to £1,000. Two pence coins have been in circulation since 1971, however, in 1983 a crucial change was made to the format of
the coin, skyrocketing the value of those made prior to this date. Coin expert, UKCoinHunt, explained how this was due to an amendment of the words on the 2p, as the old "new
pence," printing swapped to the "two pence" writing which is now so well-known. He said: "1983 is the switch from the new pence over to the two pence. Two different bits
of writing on each coin. READ MORE: EXPERT WARNS UK HOUSEHOLDS OVER 'RARE' 50P COINS SOLD ON EBAY FOR UP TO £100,000 "The one your looking for is 'new pence' around

you have that exact coin [...] you're looking at a thousand pounds." The TikToker, who goes by @uk.coin.hunt, continued, describing the mystery around this specific coin. He said:
"No one knows how many of these were minted, but you never know, you could have one. Just keep looking. "And remember, 1983 only with New Pence [written on it]." Coin
enthusiasts in the comment section claimed they had the coin, with one person stating they had three of the 1983 edition. The social media user even offered the content creator all of them
for an eyewatering £1,500. Others said coins like this were often found in private collections, so it would be difficult to find one. They added: "Those are in private collections.
Don't really think we'd be able to find any." To find out if your coin could be rare, there are a number of factors you should keep in mind, including its market demand, grade
and quality. READ MORE: UK HOUSEHOLDS COULD BE SITTING ON RARE £2 COIN WORTH UP TO £1,000 BullionByPost also explained how mintage number, the number of coins produced and the amount of
coins in circulation should be considered. Article continues below If a mistake was made while the coin was minted, or there is some sort of variation within it, this is pinpointed as
another sign to look out for. The website stated: "Valuable coins are not necessarily scarce coins, but rarity will always add to the value of a coin. Precious metal bullion coins, such
as gold Sovereigns, have an initial high price because of their metal content.
