MARTINEZ INSTEAD SAYS A SOLUTION MUST BE FOUND BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT PORTS ACROSS SPAIN. 06:21, 04 Jun 2025 Majorca is demanding a national strategy to address cruise tourism with the City

Council committed to attracting smaller vessels, a high-end market with higher-income visitors. The mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez, has warned the Balearic Islands and Spain that it's

not enough for each destination to take measures on its own. Martinez instead says a solution must be found between the different ports across Spain. "We're limiting cruise ships

in our city, but they'll go to Cartagena; as a country, we're just moving cruise ships from one port to another," said Pedro Homar. READ MORE ALL THE PARTS OF ENGLAND SET FOR

'AT LEAST 30C' NEXT WEEK IN UK HEATWAVE Martínez informed the president of the Port Authority (APB), Javier Sanz, that the existing port fees for cruise ships should be increased.

the port), because low prices encourage shipping companies to stop in Palma to refuel. Majorca's objective is to promote the arrival of smaller vessels. These types of cruises are much

more expensive and therefore attract a wealthier visitor. This May, a total of seven ships with fewer than 500 passengers docked in the port of Palma. These were Ilma (456 people), Europa

(408), Club Med 2 (394), Evrima (298), Le Laperouse (184), Hebridean Sky (118), and Seadream I (113). Travelling on some of these exclusive ships can cost up to £9,200 (11,000 euros) per

person, according to the same publication. Article continues below Mr Martínez recently told Javier Sanz, president of the ports authority Autoritat Portuària, that existing port fees for

cruises should be raised. But polticians voted against a raft of proposals aimed at curbing overtourism, including one put forward in April which reproduced the mayor's ideas word for

word, according to a press release in the Balearic Islands.
