Chaplin/BirminghamLive) A popular high street chain looks set to close after more than 20 years in a Birmingham neighbourhood, leaving locals fearing that the once-busy centre is 'finished'.
Signs in the window of The Works in Acocks Green shop suggest the store is preparing to close, leaving the unit in between Peacocks and New Image opticians vacant.
The long-standing stationery shop has been a popular spot for back-to-school supplies, books, art equipment and children's toys since it opened in 2001.

Bosses said they're 'doing all they can to retain a presence in the town', but residents have taken to social media to share their concerns after seeing that the store was holding a closing
down sale, with many items slashed to less than half price.

on the same side of the Warwick Road parade in January.
Boots and Wilko are among the other big names to leave The Green in recent years, though Wilko has since been replaced by Asian supermarket OPUS Foods.
Mandy Kirby commented: "Not another one going?? I hate what is happening to our village."
One anonymous local wrote: "Can remember years ago you could spend hours mooching around all the shops they had.
"Three shoe shops, Dorothy Perkins, Burton, antique shop come jewellers, gift shops, three green grocers, four butchers, I can even recall the MEB gas board and Crash Bang Wallop to name a
few.

Ann Kain said: "One of the few decent shops left in The Green. What a dump now."
Article continues below Neelam Be commented: "Nooooo it's the only decent shop there!" And Leanne McNaughton added: "Acocks Green has been finished for years."
A spokesperson for The Works told BirminghamLive: "We are currently in negotiations with our landlord regarding our store in Acocks Green and would like to reassure customers that we're
doing all we can to retain a presence in the town."
