Failed modular building company Alsim System Building has been acquired out of administration by off-site specialist Thurston Group. Wakefield-based Thurston has acquired the assets,
intellectual property and customer relationships of Alsim, which had traded from premises on the city's Stockholm Road. Documents show Thurston - which employs about 380 people and is
said to be on course to turnover £60m this year - bought assets at auction for about £132,000, plus about £30,000 for the firm's intellectual property including the Alsim brand. The
move has allowed Thurston to expand its cabins division as it looks to cement itself in the UK modular and portable building sector. It says the addition of Alsim, which was set up in 1992,
will let it manufacture a type of temporary living accommodation not currently in its portfolio. Administrators were appointed to Alsim in March, after the firm had encountered difficulties
in the face of growing steel, electricity and gas costs, along with then looming Employ National Insurance Contribution rises. It had subsequently come under pressure from creditors. Most of
the firm's 36 staff were made redundant in March. Matt Goff, managing director of Thurston Group, said: “Alsim has long been respected for its design expertise and customer
relationships within the construction sector. By acquiring its assets and IP, we’re not only strengthening our own technical capability but also reinforcing our position as a trusted,
forward-thinking off-site manufacturer. “This acquisition enables us to support Alsim’s existing customers with confidence, while enriching our design library and expanding the breadth of
solutions we offer. Strategic moves like this are fundamental to Thurston’s growth — we’re actively seeking further opportunities to diversify, scale our capacity, and enhance our expertise
to better serve a growing client base and cement our leadership in the modular industry.” Thurston Group was founded in 1970 and has grown to become one of the country's largest
designers and manufacturers of portable and modular buildings, with a portfolio of more than 100 clients. The firm has four sites across East and West Yorkshire and was acquired by private
industrial investment company HLD Group in 2021 in a £16m deal. Latest accounts for the group, covering 2023, show turnover of £51m and operating profit of £4.3m. Documents show Alsim went
into administration owing an estimated £696,000 to creditors, and had an estimated deficit of about £992,000.
