Cheers! There are several happy scenes in this week's look back at the Bigg Night Out in Newcastle more than two decades ago. Pictured raising a glass with mates are smiling groups of
lads and lasses while others are clearly making the most of warmer weather in summery outfits as they take to the town. These images were taken by Chronicle photographers between the end of
May 2003 and July of that year. They featured as part of our original Bigg Night Out series which ran in the paper each week from 1992 until 2012 and captured the atmosphere in Newcastle,
especially around the Bigg Market, as people celebrated the start of the weekend. This week's pick from the archives also includes one photo taken of fans attending a Westlife show at
the Utilita Arena - then called Telewest Arena - to show what else was going on in the city at the time. Music-wise, that July saw Crazy in Love by Beyoncé, with Jay Z, top the UK singles
chart. In the previous month it was rock band Evanescence enjoying success with Bring Me to Life while earlier in May it was the big moment for R&B star R. Kelly's Ignition remix.
May's number one film at the cinemas, meanwhile, was superhero movie X2, followed by the likes of The Matrix Reloaded in June, then Bruce Almighty at the end of the month, and - in July
- Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle and Hulk. Newcastle United had finished the 2002-2003 season third in the Premier League but then did not qualify for the Champions League. Having
beaten Partizan Belgrade away, they lost at St James' Park in a penalty shoot-out. The 2003-04 season would see them finished fifth in the Premiership and they also reached the
semi-finals of the UEFA Cup but again did not make the Champions League - but that was then and just look at us now!
