LEGENDARY SUNDERLAND NIGHTCLUB THE NEW MONKEY IS COMING BACK FOR 2025 FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY IN NEWCASTLE 18:42, 31 May 2025Updated 18:51, 31 May 2025 Get ready to take a trip back in time to

the late 90s and early 00s as legendary nightspot The New Monkey is coming back for 2025. However, the massive rave taking place next month won't be in its former home of Sunderland

and, instead will be taking over a famous club in Newcastle. The New Monkey, a place at the forefront of the Makina music scene, opened up in the Pallion area of Sunderland in 1999, despite

objections from a number of local residents who raised serious concerns about late-night comings and goings, loud music and antisocial behaviour. Speaking at the time, then local councillor

Brian Dodds said: "I’ve got nothing against nightclubs or dance clubs, but its just that this particular nightclub is in the wrong situation." However, despite its critics The New

Monkey, which shut down in 2006, quickly gathered itself a large following among clubbers from all over the North East and even further afield, with it prompting its own mixtapes that were

passed around many a school classroom in the region, before, moving into the 00s, tracks were shared on mobile phones via Bluetooth. Given the nostalgia around the club, there was a lot of

excitement when, at the start of 2020, plans were confirmed for a huge New Monkey reunion for May of that year; before Covid came along and scuppered those, as pubs, bars and clubs were

forced to close down for months on end. All restrictions brought about by the pandemic ceased in the summer of 2021, meaning that, four years down the lines, it's full steam ahead for a

New Monkey takeover in Newcastle, with DJs like Andy Whitby set to take to the decks at Digital in Times Square, Newcastle city centre on Saturday, June 28 for what is being billed as a

360° rave. Hyping people up for the night, Andy took to Facebook to post: 'The North East Makina powerhouse are landing at DIGITAL — full squad, full send, full chaos! You already know

the levels!' And, while it's Newcastle that's next up for The New Monkey, a Sunderland event is in the diary for later on in the summer at Elysium nightclub on Wearside. And

there is already a huge New Monkey Boxing Day bash confirmed for this Christmas as well. Article continues below JOIN OUR WHATSAPP COMMUNITIES ChronicleLive is now on WhatsApp and we want
