Tynemouth Priory introduces 'big change' as outer gates to open on eveningsTynemouth Priory's outer gates originally closed due to antisocial behaviour in the grounds, but bosses hope that

overnight(Image: Craig Connor/ChronicleLive) The gates of one of North Tyneside's most recognisable landmarks will stay open in the evenings so that people can enjoy a stroll in the grounds.

Tynemouth Priory's outer gates will remain open overnight on weekdays from Monday, June 9 in a two-week trial, so that visitors can walk around the moat. The gates were originally closed due

to damage and antisocial behaviour.

‌ English Heritage said that the change marks an "important step" in reconnecting with the local community. A spokesperson said: "We want the Priory to be a shared space for everyone -

somewhere to relax, reflect, and enjoy the historic surroundings together.

‌ "We're trialling this change because we believe in the community and want to offer a safe, respectful place for everyone to enjoy the summer evenings. We kindly ask that you help us make

this work by respecting the site and reporting any issues to our staff or the local community policing team."

There are four rules in place - no smoking, no barbecues, no littering, and "please pick up after your dog". English Heritage confirmed that the gates at the bottom would also be open on

weekdays, to allow access to the Haven.

news, especially in the summer months."

Another said: "Woohoo! Great news," while a third said: "Good luck! This deserves to go well".

However, others expressed concern that the antisocial behaviour that originally caused the gates to be closed may return. One commenter said: "Honestly I'd be very surprised if this doesn’t

immediately attract the very people it hopes to avoid," while another said: "And with that the price of our membership will rise next year to pay for the damage, I love your optimism that

it'll be used correctly."
