THE PRESIDENT WAS NOT HIT AND WAS PROMPTLY ESCORTED AWAY BY HIS SECURITY TEAM President Emmanuel Macron had several cherry tomatoes thrown at him while on a visit to a market in Cergy (Val
d’Oise) this afternoon (April 27). > Emmanuel Macron ciblé par un jet de tomates lors de son > déplacement à Cergy pic.twitter.com/3J0hXIZSRP > — BFMTV (@BFMTV) April 27, 2022 Mr
Macron was talking to people in a crowd in the northwestern Paris suburb, when the fruits were thrown. The tomatoes hit a passerby but did not reach the president, whose bodyguards quickly
opened an umbrella to shield him. Mr Macron’s visit to the area, which was his first outing since his reelection on Sunday (April 24) was then cut short as he was escorted away by his
security team. Around 48% of Cergy voters had backed Far-Left candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon (La France Insoumise) in the first round of this year’s presidential election, with only 23.7%
voting for the incumbent president. Mr Macron said that he had been visiting the area to show his commitment to listen to all French people, regardless of who they voted for. “I have come to
say that I have heard the voices of each and everyone, and that I will continue to be engaged with the neighbourhoods that are most in difficulty […] every day,” he had commented before the
incident took place, Franceinfo reports. RELATED ARTICLES DID YOU KNOW: FRANCE'S PRESIDENT WAS NOT ALWAYS ELECTED BY THE PEOPLE MACRON WINS SECOND TERM AS PRESIDENT: HOW DID YOUR AREA
