Police were alerted and when officers turned up they saw Fagan, 36, crawling through the panel.

He had stolen a bottle of aftershave and this was found in his jacket pocket.

Fagan also admitted carrying a bladed item - a screwdriver - without reasonable excuse in Kirkness Street, Airdrie, on March 7.

The court heard he was on bail for the flat break-in when police officers stopped and searched him at around 10.40pm.

Fagan further admitted breaching a community payback order imposed for possessing a knife at Aldi in High Street, Airdrie, on November 30, 2023.

Defence lawyer Simon Gilmour said his client has struggled with addiction issues and suggested he could be assessed for a drug treatment and testing order.

Mr Gilmour stated: "He believes he can abstain from illicit substances.

"There is a chance he could obtain employment in a relative's business."

But Sheriff Tony McGlennan told Fagan: "You have a terrible record and I must take that into account.

"I have to deter you from further offending and protection of the public must also be considered."
