THE M5 MOTORWAY HAS BEEN CLOSED IN BOTH DIRECTIONS FOLLOWING A HORROR CRASH IN THE EARLY HOURS OF THIS MORNING, WHICH HAS LEFT THREE PEOPLE DEAD, INCLUDING A CHILD 09:42, 31 May 2025Updated
11:28, 31 May 2025 The M5 is shut in both directions following a devastating nighttime crash that claimed the lives of three people. Two adults in their 40s and a teenager, all occupants of
a white BMW, tragically lost their lives. A second child is fighting for life in hospital after suffering severe injuries. Emergency services scrambled to the scene and investigations are
still ongoing. The collision, which required the urgent deployment of an air ambulance, occurred between Junction 13 in Stroud and Junction 14 in Thornbury. Emergency services, including the
air ambulance, have descended upon the scene, reports the Express. According to National Highways South West: "Due to the nature of the incident, the road will remain closed for a
while." Most recently, they shared an update on X, around nine hours after the initial incident, which read: "The #M5 remains closed in both directions between J14 (#Falfield) and
J13 (#Stroud) following a serious collision which occurred last night. "@ASPolice investigation works are ongoing at scene. Delays are now starting to build on approach, please plan
ahead of your journey." There is currently no news on when the road may reopen, but the Police said it would be "at least a few hours" this morning (May 31). Cameras show all
traffic in the area being diverted. Drivers heading northbound should follow this diversion route: Exit the M5 northbound at J14 and turn left onto the B4509 At the junction with the A38,
turn right and join the A38 northbound Continue on the A38 northbound, passing through the villages of Cambridge and Claypits, to then re-join the M5 northbound at J13. National Highways has
also spoken out. In a statement issued on Saturday (May 31), it said: “A police investigation is currently in progress following a serious collision. Due to the severity of the incident and
the complexity of the vehicle recovery, the closure will remain in place for an extended duration to enable a comprehensive investigation. “Upon completion, National Highways Service
Providers will carry out an assessment of the infrastructure and commence any necessary repairs. “The closure is anticipated to remain in effect until the afternoon. “We're currently
reporting delays on approach of at least 60 minutes northbound and 45 minutes southbound.” Before that, Inspector Mark Vicary, of Avon and Somerset’s roads policing unit, warned that the
road will remain shut "for the next few hours, however we are doing all we can to reopen it as soon as possible." Article continues below He added: “We appreciate this closure is
causing delays and disruption to the public, particularly at the end of the half-term break. But given the severity of this distressing incident, we hope the public can understand the
reasons why this is necessary and ask them to consider alternative travel plans.” _FOR THE LATEST BREAKING NEWS AND STORIES FROM ACROSS THE GLOBE FROM THE DAILY STAR, SIGN UP FOR OUR
