CURRYS WORKER ADEEL HABIB SUED FOR RACISM WHEN HIS MUG WENT MISSING, BUT AN EMPLOYMENT JUDGE REJECTED HIS CLAIM THAT HIS REACTION WAS 'OUT OF PROPORTION' AND
'CONFRONTATIONAL' 22:34, 28 May 2025 Getting upset when your work mug goes missing is ‘out of proportion’ and likely to spark ‘resentment’, a tribunal ruled. Moaning your favourite
cup was nicked is ‘confrontational’, an employment judge found after Currys worker Adeel Habib sued for racism when his mug went missing. He got ‘greatly upset’ when someone else took it
and was ‘cold shouldered’ by colleagues after going into a huff. Habib claimed he was being discriminated against, but the tribunal rejected his race claim against the electrical giant after
ruling his reaction - which implied fellow staff were guilty of theft - was ‘out of proportion’. The panel in Southampton, Hants, found any ‘resentment’ towards him was caused by his
‘confrontational’ attitude. Habib was fired after just four months as a credit support associate at Currys’ office in Poole, Dorset. Article continues below He had been working there only a
few weeks when the mug row blew up. A co-worker explained if he had left it in the kitchen then someone else had probably used it as those cups were seen as communal. She offered to go
around the office with him and ask colleagues if they had seen it. Afterwards Habib - who is of Pakistani background - said he was snubbed by colleagues in what he claimed was race
discrimination. But employment Judge David Hughes said the ‘resentment’ Habib experienced had nothing to do with his race. The judge said: “We find that Mr Habib was probably very upset
about his mug. “Just how upset he was probably seemed to his colleagues to be out of proportion to the loss of a mug. Mr Habib can use language that is apt to strike others as
confrontational even if he does not intend to be. “We find that he probably did give his colleagues reason to believe that he viewed the loss of the mug as stealing. We find that this is
likely to have caused some resentment towards him. “Sad though it is to have to say this, it seems to us to be likely that Mr Habib is, unfortunately, ill-equipped to cope with the nuances
of social interaction in the workplace, and lacks the sort of social skills that might have eased tensions that arose around the mug incident.” Further claims he had been sexually harassed
and unfairly dismissed were also tossed out. Article continues below _FOR THE LATEST BREAKING NEWS AND STORIES FROM ACROSS THE GLOBE FROM THE DAILY STAR, SIGN UP FOR OUR NEWSLETTER BY
