down its report on Parliamentary Salaries which found the basic salary for a Tasmanian politician should increase by about $13,000.

Under legislation, the recommendation is binding unless both houses of Parliament vote it down.

So far the Greens, Liberals and Labor have said they would not support the pay hike.

Premier Will Hodgman said on Tuesday the government would not be supporting the recommendations in Parliament.

''It's out of step with community expectations,'' Mr Hodgman said.

''Politicians should not be setting their own pay.

''An assessment has been made by an independent umpire but the decision is out of sync with community expectations,'' he said.

When the legislation was debated in the upper house last year, MLCs indicated they did not want to set their own pay, and wanted the independent umpire to do it for them.
