reviewing the language used in such offences, particularly that of 'maintaining a sexual relationship with a young person'.

End Rape On Campus director Nina Funnell said the name of this offence had been rightly criticised as it sanitised the true nature of the offending which was repeated sexual offending

She said it also implied a level of consent by children and young people where no such consent existed.

Ms Funnell said the word 'relationship' had a positive connotation which should not be used in the context of child sexual offending.

She said the wording of the offence should be "persistent sexual abuse of a child"; a recommendation which had been supported by Beyond Abuse spokesman Steve Fisher and sex abuse victim

Grace Tame.

Ms Funnell said the group recommended renaming the legal term 'unlawful sexual intercourse with a young person' should be renamed to 'permitting child sexual abuse'.

"We agree that the title of the crime of 'sexual intercourse with a young person' does not recognise that a child or young person is unable to give lawful consent," she said.

"We do not support merely adding the word "unlawful" to the crime as, in our experience, this does not capture the gravity of the offence."

Ms Funnell said the offence of procuring unlawful sexual intercourse with a young person should should be renamed to 'procuring child sexual abuse'.

Consultation by the state's Justice Department on changing the names of sexual offences ended last month.
