This is despite the centres being closed for several months due to COVID-19 restrictions and a massive drop in tourism numbers caused by the pandemic.

According to the council's latest briefing document about 33,000 less people visited the information centres than in the 2018/19 financial year.

A note in the agenda, from Tuesday's meeting, said employee costs were down in relation to the centres this year because staff were redeployed to other areas during the lockdown.

Acting mayor Jenny Woods declined to comment.

A new mayor and councillor are set to be appointed to the GSB council in September with byelection voting closing on September 1.
