Tragic final hours of man who sprayed faeces on supermarket food

A man who was jailed for contaminating supermarket produce with his urine and faeces hanged himself, West Yorkshire Coroner's Court has heard. Shanoun Daifalah, 58, took his own life in

his bathroom in Field Lane, Holmfirth, before being found by his neighbours on February 16. Shanoun, known to friends as Sam, had been dead for some time, the court heard, though a specific

timescale could not be determined. Colin Gilroy, one of Mr Daifalah's neighbours, and another neighbour were concerned they had not seen him for several days. They went into the house,

which was left open, and eventually found him hanging in the bathroom. “I sadly found my friend called Sam,” Colin said in a statement read out by Assistant Coroner Ian Pears. “I have known

him for 18 months. I have lived on the same street for 30. He introduced himself when he moved in as a new neighbour. I would class him as a really good friend. He would regularly help me

with jobs. I saw Sam on a daily basis and we would say hello to each other.” On entering the property, Colin added: “I do not have a key to Sam’s house. I just got lucky with the door being

open. Otherwise, we never would have found him.” The statement added: “Sam used to tell me he had mental health issues and was in a psychiatric ward. He said he used cocaine and had no

friends.” In 2009, Mr Daifalah was convicted of spraying a mixture of urine and faeces from a 1.5-litre container in a bookshop, a pub and two supermarkets, contaminating food and wine. He

caused more than £700,000 of damage in a two-day rampage and had plans to attack further cities. When police searched Mr Daifallah's house in Gloucester they sound stockpiles of the

mixture and plans to spread it in other cities, it was reported. It was reported that he had fantasies about biological weapons to cause public harm. The Algerian-born man was jailed for

nine years at Bristol Crown Court. At the time, the court was told proceedings to deport Shanoun back to Algeria were underway, but by 2017, this had not happened and he was eventually

housed in a council property in Holmfirth. Despite being branded a "potentially very dangerous man", Shanoun was not known to local health or social work services in Kirklees. A

paramedic who attended the scene when called by the neighbours said: “I was allocated to attend the house following a report of a patient dying by hanging and arrived at the scene at 12.30.

“We met the police officers inside the property. I was met by a foul smell and could see the patient one metre away. This was the source of the foul smell. I verified the patient to be

deceased. We returned to the ambulance, and it was a short while until we could confirm the patient’s identity. There was no clear time when the patient was last seen.” Mr Pears concluded

Shanoun died by suicide. HOW TO ACCESS SUPPORT IF YOU NEED IT If this piece has affected you and you want to talk to someone, there are helplines and support groups available, many of them
