In the first seven days since its release, Skyfall has smashed records by taking £37.2million. This overtakes Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 – which raked in £35.7million.

During the opening weekend alone, the 23rd Bond movie in the franchise’s 50-year history made £20.1million at British cinemas.

Producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said: “We are very grateful to the Bond fans and all UK cinema audiences for making Skyfall the biggest opening week ever during our 50th

anniversary year.”

Jeff Blake, chairman of Sony Pictures who distribute the film, added: “We couldn’t be more proud of the critical and commercial reaction Skyfall has received. The results are a true

testament to the 50 year legacy of James Bond.”

Since Skyfall opened at 587 cinemas across the UK and Ireland, the film has been praised by critics.

Directed by Sam Mendes, it stars Daniel Craig in his third outing as 007, Dame Judi Dench as M and Javier Bardem as the villain with Berenice Marlohe and Naomie Harris as the latest Bond

girls.

The plot sees Bond’s loyalty to M tested when her past comes back to haunt her – and even sees the MI6 HQ under attack.
