The 55-year-old star, who suffers from bipolar disorder, admitted this week that he tried to take his own life recently by taking pills and downing vodka. It seems that Fry was recording new

series 'Stephen Fry - Out There' in Africa, and it was this that tipped him over the edge. During his visit, the actor confronted government officials and community leaders who

oppose gay rights and even learned that they were trying to bring in laws to have homosexual people executed. According to The Sun, a spokesman for the programme said: "Contemplating

his own experience as a gay man in the spotlight, Stephen sets out to explore what lies beneath people’s prejudices and why some people feel so threatened by homosexuality. "As well as

uncovering the difficulties faced by many gay people the world over, Stephen’s journey also reveals an inspiring story of bravery and resilience, celebrating the triumph of love in the face

of adversity." Fry found himself in a very low place while filming in the Ugandan capital Kampala, but luckily the show's producer Fergus O’Brien found the star and got help.

"It was shocking to see what he had done but we knew that he had suffered from manic depression," a source told the newspaper. "The whole point of the series was to confront

people with these bizarre views and try to make some sense of what they were saying." The two-part series sees Fry looking at "how the lives of men and women in different

communities across the globe have been impacted by their sexuality," and is expected to air some time this year.
