George RR Martin has written countless books which have enthralled fans for years. His series A Song of Ice and Fire, however, has been particularly exciting to fans, with the sixth book

coming out soon. But will the new series called House of the Dragon - based on his book Fire and Blood - be released before The Winds of Winter? House of the Dragon is not expected to drop

any time soon, with the president of programming at HBO Casey Bloys estimating the air date will be some time in 2022. Speaking about the series, Bloys said: “For me for right now, I think

getting House of the Dragon on the air will be the number one priority. “There are no other blinking green lights or anything like that. Sometime down the road who knows, but there are no

immediate plans.” He reiterated: “We are all focusing on House of the Dragon.” He also said “they” are starting writing, which including Martin and showrunner Ryan Condal. If Bloys’ words

are anything to go by, it could be House of the Dragon is also the priority for Martin, meaning yet another delay to The Winds of Winter. The Winds of Winter has been in the pipeline for

some time, and fans fear Martin might have delayed its release in order to rewrite the ending, given the unpopular turn the series Game of Thrones took. Fans were livid with the final season

of the HBO show, so it may be given how furious fans were, Martin has decided to edit some of his intended storylines for the book. Showrunners DB Weiss and David Benioff asked Martin for

advice on the final two seasons of the show, given Martin had not yet written the books which would become their basis. As a result, fans’ fury over the storylines could lead Martin to make

changes, or even turn his attention to House of the Dragon in order to focus on a show which pleases fans, rather than frustrating them. Speaking on his blog about the show in 2019, Martin

said: “The show stirring up all the internet headlines right now is one of the other [successor shows]. Also a prequel. “Set thousands of years after Jane [Goldman]’s show in the history of

Westeros. And yes, it is based on material from one of my books.” The material on which it is based is Fire and Blood, a fictional history of the Targaryen house, which included the Mother

of Dragons herself Daenerys. The series is expected to take place 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and while we are unlikely to see characters we have been following in Game

of Thrones, there may be ancestors of families such as the Starks and the Lannisters. We are also likely to meet Aegon Targaryen, known as ‘The Conqueror,” and even possible his

sister-wives, who were regularly mentioned in the original series. There are also other historical moments, such as the Targaryen Civil War (known as the Dance of the Dragons) which could

feature, as well as the forming of the Iron Throne and the Seven Kingdoms. Speaking further about the series, Martin said: “For what it’s worth, those who have read Fire & Blood will

realise it contains enough materials for a dozen shows. “I can say that there will be dragons. Everyone else has said that, so why not me?” But of course, the question is, will this series

come out before The Winds of Winter is released? One thing Martin said certainly suggests this will not be the case, when he promised fans he would have the final version of The Winds of

Winter ready to enjoy at Worldcon in New Zealand, which takes place between July 29 and August 2. As a result, we should be seeing the sixth book much before the series, though there is no

telling when Martin’s seventh A Song of Ice and Fire book, A Dream of Spring, will be released.
