Jonathan Barbera, Founder of Parkers MOT said he had conducted more tests in recent weeks than the “last three or four months” as interest has risen. Mr Barbera said drivers wanted to get

their vehicle “sorted out” before heading away to make sure their cars were safe.

He also suggested many road users were scared of future lockdowns and have made bookings now just in case.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, he said: “We have had more work than we have done in the last three or four months.

“I imagine this whole staycation is [part of it]. People are staying in the UK and travelling around in their cars.

“I also think people are almost anticipating we will go into lockdown again.

“So some people are even doing tests a little bit earlier than before to [make sure they are safe].

“In that respect, I’m really really happy. The business is making money and we are all good. But I dread things every single day.”

A new study from market research specialist JudgeService found staycation trips and a return to the office is likely to see a boost in aftersales services in garages.

A study from 2,150 motorists found easing of lockdown has already seen a considerable ramp-up in vehicle usage which could benefit garages and car retailers.

However, they warn the increase in car usage could cause problems for MOT tests ahead of an expected winter surge.

The higher car usage could see more vehicles damaged and fail tests leading to higher workloads for garage staff.

Neil Addley, managing director of JudgeService said: “We’re seeing significant changes in car usage following the easing of lockdown restrictions.

“People are spending less time working from home and returning to their commute and with foreign holidays on hold for many, we are seeing a jump in leisure usage."

He added: “With over a third of owners saying they do not plan to travel on public transport for the foreseeable future, car usage will undoubtedly increase as a result,

“[This] presents dealers with a welcome opportunity to grow their new and used sales, providing they can source stock, as well as aftersales for servicing and repair work.”

Mr Barbera has been outspoken about the dangers of the ‘pingdemic’ on MOT garages.

He said he “didn’t know” how long his business could survive if his garage was forced to shut due to staff being forced to self-isolate.

He recently added drivers would likely be affected by the problem with tests likely to be cancelled if staff members were forced to stay at home.
