Speaking about the research, the authors said: “The increased relative risk of CVD diagnosis in more recent decades may be a result of disparity in smoking prevalence between people with SMI
and the general population or increased use of antipsychotics. “The changes since the 1990s approximately coincide with the release of newer, second-generation antipsychotics which are
known to have worse metabolic effects.” Amanda Lambert of the University of Birmingham added: “Our systematic review and meta-analysis of over 100 studies has confirmed a strong association
between severe mental illness and cardiovascular disease which became stronger in the 1990s and 2000s.” As a result, this review opens up the possibility of mental health being used as an
indicator of the likelihood of cardiovascular disease.
