Princess Diana was dubbed “Shy Di”, when she first hit the headlines as Prince Charles’ intended bride in 1980. Her signature look, with big blue eyes looking up from beneath a blonde
fringe, was recognised around the world. Prince William too, when he started to be noticed more in the spotlight, would adopt the mannerism that would remind so many royal watchers of the
prince’s mother. However, the heir to the throne spoke about the gesture, and the real reasons behind it. In his 2006 book ‘William’s Princess’, veteran royal editor Robert Jobson commented
on William’s perceived shy look. Mr Jobson wrote: “The shyness that many commentators and royal observers detected in him was, according to some of William’s school friend, a winning trait
when it came to attracting girls. “In many ways, William the bashful’ was a person he invented; a very effective cover for a boy who was growing in confidence daily. “He later insisted he
was never really shy at al, but just did not like being photographed and felt that if he kept his head down people wouldn’t recognise him.” William himself said in 2002: “But, it’s very
funny, I was called shy because I put my head down so much when I was in public. “It was never because I was shy. “It was a really naive thing that I hadn’t picked up on. I know it’s silly
and that everyone will laugh at it. READ MORE: ROYAL SNUB: HOW WILLIAM'S SURPRISE TALENT 'DISGUSTED' DIANA “It was very silly. I wouldn’t say I prefer to be unnoticed because
that’s never going to happen. “But I’m someone who doesn’t particularly like being the centre of attention.” Mr Jobson added: “Unfortunately for William, being centre of attention goes with
the territory.
