Mr Markle’s operation three days earlier prevented him from flying to the UK to walk his daughter down the aisle on Saturday, with father of the groom Prince Charles stepping into the
breach. American magazine US Weekly reported a source as saying 36-year-old Meghan “didn’t talk to her father” on her big day. Former lighting director Mr Markle told the TMZ website on
Saturday that he was watching the ceremony on television, noting that it was “emotional and joyful” for him. He added: “My baby looks beautiful and she looks very happy. “I wish I were there
and I wish them all my love and happiness. “My baby girl is a duchess and I love her so much. “When you watch your child get married, every thought goes through your mind, every memory from
the first day she was born, the first time I held her. “I will always regret not being able to be there and not being able to hold my daughter's hand.” Mr Markle, who lives in Mexico
resident, hit the headlines days before the wedding after apparently staging paparazzi pictures of himself reading stories about the Royal Couple, as well as being fitted for a suit. Days of
see-saw speculation followed about whether or not he would be attending the ceremony, with reports that he was upset that he had embarrassed his daughter. It was then reported he had
suffered a heart attack and would not be able to travel. Eventually, in a statement issued by Kensington Palace, Meghan said: “Sadly, my father will not be attending our wedding.
PHOTOGRAPHER: THOMAS MARKLE 'OBVIOUSLY' GOT PAID FOR PHOTOS “I have always cared for my father and hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health. “I would like to
thank everyone who has offered generous messages of support.” Meghan has faced criticism from some members of her family who were angry not to receive invitations. But Mr Markle subsequently
told TMZ: “Now I pray that Harry and Meghan can go on a nice honeymoon and rest and relax, and all of my relatives will just shut up about everything.” US Weekly’s source said that while
Meghan was “upset” by the photo situation, she was also “devastated” that her father would not there. She and her new husband are rumoured to be planning to visit Mr Markle after they return
from their honeymoon.
