In 2006 then Detective Superintendent Swindle was the senior investigating officer in the case of missing Polish student Angelika Kluk, 23, who was raped, killed and concealed under the

floorboards in St Patrick’s Church in Glasgow by Tobin – who was a 60-year-old handyman there. When Tobin was jailed in 2008 Det Supt Swindle set up Operation Anagram, which proved Tobin had

killed missing teenagers Vicky Hamilton, 15, and 18-year-old Dinah McNicol.  The pair, who were last seen in 1991, were found buried under concrete in the back garden of one of his former

homes.  Now the detective, who was in the police for 34 years, has told how the case affected him.  He said: “It is a landmark part of my career. It’s something I’ll always remember. I wish

it had never happened.  “It is unusual to investigate serial killers. Not every detective does that and this was the first time I had dealt with it.  “I was very experienced. But no matter

what experience is, nothing can prepare you for the worst.  “He was pure evil and his eyes are black. There is a void right through, nothing behind there. He is the worst murderer, the worst

criminal I ever dealt with in my career as a police officer.”  Mr Swindle said that after the Kluk conviction he was certain there would be more bodies. He helped set up Anagram to

investigate, leading to the Hamilton and McNicol cases.  He said:“You don’t get to 60 and kill for the first time.  “I was determined. I could have taken the easy option and say Tobin is

going to prison for Angelina Kluk and will never be out. But from a professional point of view and for his victims I wanted to do everything I could.  “You could call it an obsession. That’s

what it was – a search for the truth.”  Mr Swindle, who now runs his own private investigations company, has teamed up with TV show British Police: Our Toughest Cases to reveal how he found

Tobin’s victims. Tobin transported Vicky Hamilton from Edinburgh to his home in Margate, Kent, and buried her in his garden, before kidnapping Dinah McNicol and concealing her in the same

place.  Swindle believes he planned to do a similar thing to Angelika Kluk before police discovered her body.  He remains convinced no one will know how many people Tobin, now 73, who has

also served jail time for raping a 14-year-old girl, killed.  And he said he does not believe Tobin will ever reveal his other victims.  He said : “I’m in no doubt he murdered others but to

connect him to specific crimes is unfair to the victims’ families. Police deal in facts, not speculation.”  ● _British Police: Our Toughest Cases, 10pm, Saturday on Quest Red._
