Forecasts for an unseasonal 27C this weekend have seen a surprise October scramble for barbecue food, along with ice creams and beers.
A rush is expected at stores this morning and early afternoon as the mini-heatwave hits and people head for picnics and get-togethers.
Tesco’s Tara Darbari said: “The great, unseasonal weather predicted for the weekend has created a real feelgood factor in anticipation of what could be one of the biggest October barbecue
weekends.

“Barbecue opportunities were thin on the ground this summer, and we think a lot of people will be in their gardens to make the most of the unexpected sunshine.”
Between Friday and Sunday, Tesco expects to sell 300,000 packs of sausages, one million packs of burgers, 600,000 punnets of strawberries, 1.5 million tubs of ice cream and three million
bottles or cans of beer.

Rupert Bates, editor of BBQ Magazine, said: “This is likely to be the latest ever full-on barbecue weekend. Enthusiasts will barbecue in October, but you don’t often see the widespread
grilling likely this weekend. It will be one of those weekends where it’s a dash for straightforward fare like burgers and sausages.”
Alex Burkill, from the Met Office, said: “It will be a fine, dry day on Saturday, unusually warm for the time of year.”
