Manfred Weber attempted to mock the former Ukip leader by insisting he “led by example” on Britain’s pending departure from the Brussels club. Mr Farage caused a furore when he likened the
European Union to the mafia during Wednesday’s fiery Brexit debate in the bloc’s parliament. MEPs from across the 28 nations have been voting on guidelines for the EU’s negotiators ahead of
official Brexit talks. Mr Weber, a German member of the Christian Social Union, used his closing statement to make a number of digs at Mr Farage. He said: “I’m rather interested to see how
Nigel Farage sees the next two years panning out for him.” Referencing Tory MEP Syed Kamall, who decided not to make a statement in the debate, Mr Weber continued: “I want to respect the
fact that Mr Kamall didn’t speak today, he gave the floor to non-Brits to express the position of the group. “I hope that Mr Farage shows the same sense of respect and honour and perhaps
allows his Italian colleagues to speak on behalf of the group.” Earlier in the debate, Mr Farage lauded the 17.4 million UK residents who voted to leave the bureaucracy of the Brussels club
in June’s referendum. “All I can say is thank goodness we’re leaving,” the Ukip MEP once again told politicians from the remaining 27 states. The patriotic line appeared to rile Mr Weber,
who tried to shun Mr Farage by telling him never to return to the European Parliament. In his finishing statement, he retorted: “Nigel Farage has told us in recent years how great it is
that the UK is leaving the EU. “So perhaps you could lead by example and no longer bother us in the debate in the European Parliament?” Meanwhile, Mr Farage was told off during his
two-minute speech earlier on Wednesday. After slating the bloc for allowing Spain a veto over any Brexit deal in Gibraltar, Mr Farage fumed: “You have shown yourselves with these demands as
vindictive… You’re behaving like the mafia, you think we’re a hostage, we’re not, we’re free to go!” The blistering put down was met with jeers, as the President of the European
Parliament, Antonio Tajani, told off the Eurosceptic. NIGEL FARAGE TELLS EU: YOU'RE BEHAVING LIKE THE MAFIA “I do understand, Mr President, national sensitivities,” Mr Farage
continued. “I’ll change it to gangsters and that is how we’re being treated. “We’re being given a ransom note, but what must be very difficult for all of you to get into your minds is there
is a bigger world out there than the European Union. “Eighty-five per cent of the global economy is outside the European Union. If you wish to have no deal, if you wish to force us from the
table, it is not us that will be hurt.”
