HBO eventually gave the showrunners another $10 million to fix the first episode and a budget of $50 million for the series, with the pilot re-shot during overall filming. With the renewed
backing, several changes were made: Emilia Clarke was cast as Daenerys Targaryen, replacing Tamzin Merchant, and Michelle Fairley stepped in as Catelyn Stark in place of Jennifer Ehle. The
script, too, was refreshed and retooled with more lines which communicated the significance of places and people to other characters, and at the same time the audience. There are elements of
the original episode which did remain and, in one case, led to a prominent goof within the episode.
