Pierre Gasly is encouraged by potential FIA changes over the penalty points rules that have left him on the verge of a one-race F1 ban. The Frenchman has racked up the most penalty points on
the F1 grid this season in a frustrating final season at AlphaTauri. This is set to be Gasly’s worst season since 2018 based on Drivers’ Championship points, with the AlphaTauri driver
picking up just 23 points and currently sitting 14th in the standings. He has accrued almost half as many penalty points with 10 this season alone, meaning he is now just two away from
triggering a one-race ban. The points system brought in by the FIA governing body in 2014 is aimed to punish repeat offenders, but no driver has yet racked up the 12 points that forces an
immediate race ban. Gasly, however, could become the first driver to receive the automatic suspension punishment as his penalty points aren’t wiped until the Monaco Grand Prix next year
because they have all been handed out this season. But despite his poor discipline, Gasly has denied accusations that he is a dangerous driver, and has welcomed changes that could prevent
future bans for unwarranted offences. READ MORE: VALTTERI BOTTAS HAS LEWIS HAMILTON SUSPICION AFTER VERSTAPPEN DRAMA “We all agree, and the stewards agree, it is quite harsh, so I think they
are working on it and should come up with something different for next year.” Gasly is walking a tightrope after a number of infringements during an underwhelming 2022 season. Four of his
ten penalty points have come from collisions, while he has also been penalised for driving too fast under red flags, Safety Car infringements and other track limit offences. The 26-year-old
is replacing Fernando Alonso at Alpine next year, with the Spaniard set to take the retiring Sebastian Vettel’s seat at Aston Martin. And Gasly will hope he keeps his record clean at the
Abu Dhabi finale to avoid a race-ban with his new team ahead of the 2023 campaign.
