Liverpool were forced to abandon their interest in the Southampton star after ‘tapping up’ the defender. The Dutchman has had no shortage of admirers, with Chelsea and Manchester City also

keen. Jurgen Klopp was pushing for a £60million deal which would have made Van Dijk the world’s most expensive defender, but the approach infuriated Saints. And former Reds defender Riise

was pressed for his thoughts on the matter during a Twitter Q&A session with the fans. His answer was terse as he tweeted: “Embarrassing.” Meanwhile, Riise was also forced to tackle what

the club should do with Daniel Sturridge. The England international was the subject of transfer rumours in January, with West Ham and Tottenham linked. Sturridge, who was overlooked by

Klopp last term, has only been able to play in short bursts due to his catalogue of injury problems. And while stopping short of suggesting which club the 27-year-old should join next, Riise

admits Sturridge needs to leave Anfield. He added: “Think it's best for him to go where he can play regularly.” Riise also reckons Liverpool need to sign a centre-back, striker and a

left-back. Klopp has drawn up a list of targets, and has made signing a winger a priority as he seeks to add more pace to his squad. The German tactician is expected to be backed heavily in

the summer window, as the Reds will return to Champions League football next term, providing they win their play-off match first.
