prior to the Commonwealth Games. Hughes was a training partner of eight-time Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt until the Jamaican’s retirement. Asher-Smith denied the break-up with Hughes

would be a distraction ahead of the Games and found it “hilarious” the media were interested in her love life. At the Commonwealth Games that year, Hughes won the 200m event but was later

stripped of the victory when replays showed his flailing arm crossing into a neighbouring lane and impeding an opponent. Asher-Smith had won bronze in the women’s 200m earlier that day.

Reacting to Hughes’ disqualification, she said: “I know how much this meant to him. “But at the end of the day he is in great shape and that is what you have to take away from it.”
