Google Maps Street View has captured a horrifying image that looks like something out of a nightmare. A road in New Mexico, USA seems to be nothing like a normal road. More like Edvard
Munch’s The Scream painting than a real location, Highway 285, near Albuquerque, is an array of blurred colours. Google Maps shows the road to be a green-grey colour while all around it is a
mass of purple and pinks. What’s more, the road appears to lead absolutely nowhere making it look even more supernatural. New Mexico is particularly famous for being home to Roswell, known
for UFO sightings and the paranormal. However, there is likely a more rational explanation for the bizarre distorted image. Realistically it is probably a glitch, which often happens on
Google Maps. The cameras can sometimes make a mistake when splicing the images together and create some tricky optical illusions. This particular one is much harder to explain, but it may
have simply rendered the images around it incorrectly. It is far from the first time entire streets have been morphed into other-wordly sights. Cherry Dale Road in Chester is a quiet road
home to a number of quaint houses and gardens with a few pedestrians out on the street. Yet when moving through the area, the whole world changes and it becomes a multicoloured world of
geometric shapes. Another example is a road in Santa Catarina in Brazil. When attempting to explore it on Google Maps, it hides a weird secret. Travelling down the road, the entire map
suddenly goes black, plunging the user into the dark. It continues down for quite some way of the road, also showing some mysterious green markings. Sometimes the glitch only happens to part
of the Street View image, as with a street believed to be in Europe. While the row of houses may seem ordinary enough, a strange phenomenon appears to be occurring on the pavement and on
the walls. A bizarre purple substance seems to be staining the stone. It creeps up the exterior of the houses as though invading the properties. In some places, it morphs into a sickly
yellow colour and is rather like something out of a horror film. The unusual staining seems to mainly avoid the doors and windows, but it’s unclear why this is. Illusions have also been
known to distort people and make them look very ghostly indeed. A couple were seen on the Rue Saint Jean Baptiste in Quebec - they were entirely see-through, with their body and head a
ghost-like form.
