Prince Charles’ tumultuous love life has captured the attention of people up and down the UK, as well as elsewhere in the world. He is known for his marriage to Diana and then his nuptials
to the Duchess of Cornwall. But what if he had been married to someone else? Royal expert Robert Hardman revealed in his book Queen of the World the Prince was set up with another woman when
he was on a royal tour. When Prince Charles was 21-years-old he enjoyed a trip to the USA with his sister Princess Anne. While the royal pair were there, President Richard Nixon attempted
to set the heir to the throne up with his daughter, claims Hardman. The President had laid on an eventful visit for the British royal, “including a cookout at Camp David, a dinner dance for
700 and a trip to the top of the Washington Monument,” wrote Hardman. However, it became clear Nixon had romantic designs for his daughter to marry into the royal family. “It soon emerged
that the President was also trying to pair off the young Prince with his unmarried elder daughter, Tricia, twenty-four,” explained the author. “The two found themselves seated next to each
other at one meal after another, while the President and the First Lady told the Prince: ‘We hope we can get out of sight so you will feel completely at home.’” Such a match would have
altered the course of British history but the pair were apparently not interested in one another. “Had there been any mutual attraction - which it seems there was not - it would surely have
been squashed by clunking press headlines suggesting that the pair were already an item,” said Hardman. Despite the failed matchmaking, Charles and Anne were touched by Nixon’s efforts to
make them feel welcome. “The Prince later wrote to the Foreign Secretary, Sir Alec Douglas-Home, saying that the President had been ‘extremely hospitable’ and ‘over-flowing with kind
remarks’ about the ‘special relationship.’” The Prince of Wales did not forget the encounter, however, and recalled the episode years later when he met with President George W. Bush. “He
would relay the story to [the President] with a light-hearted promise that he would not try to set up his two sons with his girls, Jenna and Barbara,” said Hardman. Prince Charles also made
headlines as a youngster when he visited Australia in 1979. Australian beauty Jane Priest famously ran up to Charles while he was jogging on Cottesloe Beach in Perth. Breaking with all
royal rules, Jane gave Charles a kiss on the cheek and was seen with her arms around the Prince. Charles was clearly taken by surprise at the model’s actions but kept an arm around her as
they spoke, as footage shows. Jane - 26 years old at the time - has since revealed that the kiss was part of a PR stunt.
