THE COMPETITION TO FIND THE PFIZER TRAINEE OF THE YEAR AWARD 2011, WITH ITS £2,000 TRAINING GRANT, OPENS THIS MONTH WITH THE WINNER TO BE CHOSEN FOR THE FIRST TIME BY A JUDGING PANEL. The

award is organised in association with Poultry World and over the past four years it has been the vote of our readers that has decided the winner. Each year the award has shown the calibre

and the promise of entrants, and it is felt that the shortlisted finalists should have the opportunity to put their case direct to a judging panel. The three finalists will meet the panel,

comprising Pfizer’s poultry manager James Porritt, Poultry World editor Philip Clarke and senior ADAS consultant John Newton in September. They will then be invited to the prestigious

presentation ceremony at the House of Commons later in the autumn where the winner will be announced. Hotel accommodation in London will be provided for the finalists and their partners.

“There is a lot of practical skill, talent and enthusiasm among people starting to build a career in the poultry industry,” says Mr Porritt. “We’d like to give our finalists an equal chance

of impressing the judges and winning the award.” Mr Newton added: “Poultry is a great industry to get on in. You can begin at a low level and, if you have the ability and ambition, work your

way up to a senior tier of management.” The award has attracted entries from across the industry, reflecting the growing recognition of the importance of training to the future. Leading

training providers such as Easton College, Poultec and the Scottish Agricultural College have all been involved with winners. The 2010 winner was Benjamin Pollard _(pictured)_ who works in

pedigree breeding in Scotland with Aviagen. He is hoping to take an HNC in poultry production and also training in information technology and management. ------------------------- HOW TO
