Limousins achieve top prices at Wigton weekly primestock sale

The weekly sale of primestock at Hopes Auction Co in Wigton saw strong cattle trade with the top price of £1,674.75 achieved for a Limousin steer.


In all a total of 169 cattle, 20 bulls and 756 prime sheep and ewes went under the hammer.


In the cattle rings, a significant rise in trade was seen, especially with the heifers.  The auctioneers said: “All classes received a firmer enquiry producing higher returns”.  And the best


cattle sold to 235.5p/kg, with 11 selling for more than 230p/kg.


The top price of the day was 235.5p/kg paid for a Limousin heifer shown by AD and A Richardson Ltd, Low Bank End, Appleby and was purchased by Top Deal Meats, Denton Holme, Carlisle.  And a


Limousin heifer shown by Messrs Hewetson, Scales Hall, Calthwaite made the top price a head of £1,618.50.


The top price for steers was 234.5p/kg paid for a Limousin shown by JG & M Little, Greenhill Farm, Wigton. Top price of £1,674.75 a head was paid to Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Bothel  for a


Limousin Steer.


Bulls made a top price of 219.5p/kg which was paid for a Limousin bull shown by JG & M Little, Greenhill Farm. The top price a head was £1,755.61 for a Blonde shown by A J Wilshaw, Oulton


Hall, Oulton.  


Over Thirty Month Cattle sold to 198.5p/kg paid for a Blonde steer which was shown by Messrs W Miler, High Aketon.

Meanwhile, the sale of prime hoggs saw “flying trade far dearer on the week” with an SQQ of 239.75p/kg and a whole auction average of 233p/kg with 18 lots selling for more than 300p/kg.


The top price achieved on the day was £154 for Texel Hoggs shown by Jacob Stoddart, Hillside, which were purchased by G Riley & Sons, Dunnockshaw. And the top price of 335.7p/kg was paid for


Texel Hoggs also shown by Jacob Stoddart, which were purchased by Vivers Scotlamb, Annan.
