Lumbylaw herd returns to ring

THE on-going dispersal of the UKs largest Limousin herd saw 115 females level just short of £2000 apiece when Scottish borders breeder Richard Oates staged the penultimate offering from his

Lumbylaw herd at Borderway Mart, Carlisle.

Mr Oates, who had established a herd of 350 cows, has earned a reputation for good quality BLUP-recorded cattle. Last weeks sale once again highlighted the demand for Limousin females, and

the wealth of performance figures provided an added incentive to buyers.

The catalogue included 26 bulls, which averaged £2549, but it was the stock bull Kype Orkney that put a ceiling in the trade at 6000gns. Bought three years ago in the same ring, Orkneys

first calves were born last autumn and enhanced the appeal of many of the females in the sale.

Orkney, bred by Ron Cruickshank, Strathaven, is by the Heros-sired Cloughhead Lord and out of a Rake Terence dam. Buyers were McKinney Bros, Co Londonderry, Ulster.

Aged 10, stock bull Haltcliffe Hercules still looks like having plenty of work left in him. Hercules, one of the most influential sires used at Lumbylaw, went for 4500gns.

By Broadmeadows Cannon, he has become the national BLUP trait leader for ease of calving as well as being in the top 1% for muscle score. He has produced sons to 10,500gns. He will finish

his career with Alan Fotheringham, Forgandenny, Perth.

Leading the females at 5000gns was the heifer Lumbylaw Nailbridge, sold suckling a heifer calf. By Brockhurst Liskeard and out of a Goldies Carlos cow, she has a beef value of 27 and was

offered in-calf to Lumbylaw Mystic and had a heifer calf by him at foot. Buyer was Johnny and John Thompson for their re-established Hartsideanew herd.

The Thompsons, who have bought some of their new foundation females from the Eden herd of Cumbria breeder Andy Holliday, were after more of the same breeding. They gave 3600gns for the

heifer Lumbylaw Perfume by the Cannon son Eden Luther. She is in-calf to Hercules and has a beef value of 18.

A non-catalogued entry, the 1996-bred cow Lumbylaw Mercy made 4500gns. By Woodhouse Iron and with a heifer calf at foot, she was bought by I Renton and Son, Morpeth, Northumbria.

The last lot through the ring drew one of the leading bids of 4400gns when Lumbylaw Simeon, a 13-month-old Hercules son, sold to F Hickson and Sons, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire. Simeon is

doubled-bred to Hercules giving two lines to Cannon.

Averages: Females – 53 cows and heifers with calves £2321; 25 served heifers £1852; 23 maiden heifers £1680; 14 yearling heifers £1365. Bulls – 26 head at £2459 (Harrison & Hetherington).
