01 June 1999NFU cries over spilt milk subsidy

THE National Farmers Union (NFU) is to protest about the European Commissions decision to end Europes £70 million milk programme in December.

The ending of the scheme will cut milk subsidies for 1m children in Britain, leaving the NFU to say it was “bitterly disappointed” by the commissions decision.

NFU president Ben Gill is to write a letter of protest to Franz Fischler, European Union farm commissioner.

The commission decided to cut the scheme from next years budget after an independent report claimed it was not used enough by member states.
