A 13-year-old girl has broken a record at the North York Moors Athletic Club relay. More than 500 runners and athletics supporters descended on Stewart Park, Middlesbrough, on May 29. The

popular event sees four runners in a team, each running one leg of one mile. Local clubs Middlesbrough AC, New Marske Harriers and Stockton Striders collected the major honours in an

exciting evening of record breaking runs. New Marske Harriers 13-year-old Gabrielle Pinder broke the five minute barrier for the very testing and twisty mile. In the men's race, things

began with a mad dash to the first corner with six runners’ side by side. By the time the half mile marker arrived, Middlesbrough & Cleveland’s Greg Jayasuriya took the lead passing

Middlesbrough AC’s Jacob Brown and clocking 2 minutes and 11 seconds for the half mile. But Richmond and Zetland runner, Rob Scott, managed to pass Jayasuriya in the later stages being the

first man to cross the line and pass the baton on to his teammate. Scott achieved the fastest mile time of the night, 4 minutes and 33 seconds. But as the race progressed, it was

Middlesbrough AC’s young runners who picked up the win with their fourth runner crossing the finish line in a time of 18 minutes and 42 seconds. The female open event was a relatively easy

victory for previous event winners Stockton Striders, who beat Darlington Harriers by almost a minute. In the mixed team event, where teams can be any combination of age and gender, New

Marske Harriers managed to achieve a record breaking time, which was also the second best time of the night. Third runner ‘wunderkind’ 13-year-old Gabrielle Pinder achieved a fantastic time

of 4 minutes and 59 seconds. The team managed to knock 1 minute and 32 seconds of the current mixed record. Not to be outdone regarding records, the M200 category - where the ages of the

four male runners must add up to 200 years - was won by Leeds City AC. The Leeds runners broke the record for a second year running by completing the 4-mile route in 20 minutes and 21

seconds. North York Moors AC will hold their next relay event at Stewart Park on August 28, 2025 RESULTS MALE OPEN TEAM PRIZE WINNERS: Middlesbrough AC: Jacob Brown, Max Creasey, George
