Middlesbrough are expected to receive a financial boost this summer after Djed Spence was part of the Tottenham Hotspur team that beat Manchester United on Wednesday evening to win the

Europa League. Spence joined Tottenham from Boro in the summer of 2022. While the fee was undisclosed, It was said to be a deal worth up to £20m when performance-related add-ons were

included. However, with the defender struggling in his first two years in North London, few of those bonus requirements had previously been met. However, Spence has this season benefited

from an injury crisis at Spurs to turn his fortunes at the club around - and Boro are set to benefit after Spence came on in stoppage time to help see out the 1-0 victory. Spence’s former

Nottingham Forest team-mate Brennan Johnson scored the goal that sealed Tottenham’s first major trophy since 2008. Teesside Live understands there wasn’t a specific clause in the deal

between Boro and Tottenham on winning a European trophy. But there were clauses around appearances and qualification for the Champions League which Boro will benefit from. Winning the Europa

League results in qualification for Europe’s premier competition, meaning Boro will receive a financial boost from Tottenham’s victory. Exactly how much Boro will receive is not known, but

ahead of an important summer transfer window in which they will have some key business to do, it will be a boost. In total, Spence has made 34 appearances for Spurs this season, including

four in the Europa League. He’d played only six games in the previous two campaigns and had three different loan moves. Reacting to the historic night, Djed Spence posted a picture of

himself holding the trophy to his social media accounts with the caption: “CHAMPIONS OF EUROPE BABYYY.” As well as Chuba Akpom, other Boro connections to reply on Instagram included current

assistant head coach Jonathan Woodgate, who wrote: “Well done Djed.” Woodgate handed Spence his Boro breakthrough and was also the last person to score for Spurs in a cup final when he

scored the decisive goal in 2008’s League Cup win over Chelsea.
