A group of travellers were spotted setting up camp on a Berkshire recreation ground owned by a parish council. The group illegally parked their caravans on the site and were called upon by

councillors and the police to leave. Donnington Recreation Ground in Newbury was the site broken into. It is currently owned by Shaw-cum-Donnington Parish Council. As the group had set up an

illegal encampment, people called upon the local police force to intervene. The leader of West Berkshire Council asked Thames Valley Police in West Berkshire to enforce the new Police,

policing act did not have to be enforced and the caravans vacated the premises on the evening of Saturday, July 23. A Thames Valley Police spokesperson said: "A Section 60c notice was

issued to those on the site to leave. This did not have to be enforced as those on the encampment left the site on Saturday evening (23/7)." At the time, Cllr Lynne Doherty said that

the encampment was "completely unacceptable". She revealed that she had "been in contact" with Thames Valley Police West Berkshire "to ask they enforce the new

Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act immediately" so that the local community could "access this important park." After the police took action Cllr Doherty thanked the

officers as well as West Berkshire MP Laura Farris for their help. She said: "The residents of Donnington will be relieved to have their recreation ground back." READ NEXT
