Decades on, the 1990 release 'Miller's Crossing' is hailed as an "all-time classic" by fans, and stands out amongst the many films crafted by the acclaimed Coen
Brothers. Formulated by the adept filmmaking siblings Joel and Ethan Coen, known for their eclectic style showcased in masterpieces like 'No Country for Old Men' and
'Fargo', this American gangster movie has been lauded by viewers as the directors' "greatest" work, cementing its status as a "hallmark" of the noir
category. A critic on Rotten Tomatoes said: "All-time classic. This has all the hallmarks of a noir. The script is very complicated but never convoluted to the point where you
can't follow it, which is a testament to the masterful editing. My only real complaint is while the music is good, I wish it was used a bit more, but this really is never dry. Everyone
should give this a try once." Set against the backdrop of the 1929 Prohibition era, 'Miller's Crossing' narrates the power struggles of two antagonistic gangs. Albert
Finney stars as Irish mob leader Leo O'Bannon who inadvertently triggers conflict as he endeavours to shield his girlfriend's brother, Bernie, from rival gang complications.
Unbeknownst to him, his partner-in-crime, Tom Reagan played by Gabriel Byrne, is entangled in a secret romance with his girlfriend, reports the Daily Record. Despite Tom's scheming to
make his sibling Bernie the scapegoat, Leo stands by his choice to defend him. However, as Italian mafioso Johnny Caspar gains strength, Leo increasingly relies on his trusted lieutenant; a
reliance that is tested upon discovering Tom's affair with his girlfriend. Laced with biting wit and startling brutality, the movie puts forward a compelling question: Does Tom actually
possess any compassion? Thrown out of the gang and caught between two relentless forces, he receives orders to eliminate Bernie himself—yet, is he truly capable of carrying out such an act?
A viewer praised the film, saying: "This may be one of the best gangster films I have ever seen. There's not much action, but the drama and acting are so on point. Gabriel Byrne
and John Turturro are so freakin' good in this film. The Coen Brothers always make great movies, and this may be their biggest hidden gem." Another added: "The violence, like
the rest of Miller's Crossing, is poetically staged and strangely tasteful. But the movie's real firepower is the staccato slang of its script." Adding to the movie's
distinction is the noteworthy portrayal by celebrated actor Gabriel Byrne, whose performances in Hereditary, Little Women, and In Treatment have garnered critical acclaim. Despite lacking an
Oscar nod, many regard him as one of cinema's finest talents. Featuring in the film alongside him are John Turturro and Jon Polito, whose impressive career spanned 35 years on the
silver screen with more than 220 credits to his name. Their standout performances have earned the movie an array of five-star reviews from viewers. A viewer said: "With dialogue so
sharp it should come with a safety warning, this movie is amazing. If I had to declare my favourite film across all genres, this would be a very strong contender. Wonderful performances from
a truly super cast...so many standout scenes... and that script...close to perfect." Another fan expressed: "One of the greatest noir films of all time, Miller's Crossing is
probably the Coens' greatest film. Byrne's performance is spellbinding and stands out among terrific performances by Finney, Marcia Gay Harden, John Turturro, and Steve Buscemi.
Brilliantly shot, blocked, and edited realisation of a great screenplay, it's one of the 100 greatest films of all time." Miller's Crossing is currently available for
streaming on Amazon Prime.
