Written and created by Debbie Horsfield, the hit British television series Poldark is a historical drama based on the eponymous novel series penned by Winston Graham. The show initially
aired on BBC One for all five seasons, from 2015 to 2019, adapting the first seven of the twelve novels in Graham’s series. The series is now available to stream on Netflix and BBC iPlayer.
Set between 1781 and 1801, Poldark sees Irish actor Aidan Turner take on the role of the show’s protagonist — Ross Poldark. Ross is a British Army veteran who was an ensign sent to the
American Revolutionary War. Upon his return to his home in Cornwall, Ross finds out his father has died and left his estate in ruins. The series chronicles his attempts to restore his
fortune with the help of his maid-turned-wife, Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson), while navigating his complex relationships with his cousin Elizabeth Poldark (Heida Reed) and his rival George
Warleggan (Jack Farthing). Boasting an impressive 89 per cent average score across its five seasons on Rotten Tomatoes, one of Poldark’s seasons even raked in a 100 per cent score on the
review aggregator site. Not surprisingly, the show won the Audience Award at the 2016 BAFTA TV Awards. Filming for the series began in Cornwall and Bristol in April 2014. Speaking about the
gorgeous Cornish filming location of Poldark, protagonist Aidan Turner told PBS: “It was an amazing experience, we were so lucky. We spent about 10 weeks there and we were all over Cornwall.
There was a week we had a private, family owned beach to ourselves, in St Alstal. They just gave it to us for the week while we got the best of the British summer. It was just so idyllic,
the entire shoot, everything was just so stunning. “People aren’t going to believe we shot it in the UK, they’ll think we went to Florence or the South of France or something, because it was
actually just too beautiful. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky. You don’t have to leave the British mainland to find that sort of Paradise.” Critics generally maintained a positive
disposition towards Poldark across its five seasons, with one writing: “Such is my addiction to this particular genre that I obviously snorted the entire thing.” While one reviewer stated:
“Poldark has proved such a reliable source of Sunday comfort and joy.” Another added: “Thankfully...the series delivers immediately on the panoramic scenery and romance that this genre
demands: plunging cliffs, green fields, galloping horses and burning glances aplenty.” Another critic drew parallels between Poldark and the classic Wuthering Heights and wrote: “Much in the
vein of Wuthering Heights, the series mixes class distinctions and romance, offering the kind of classy soap that should help keep Anglophiles' cockles happily warmed between now and
more Downton Abbey.” Another reviewer said: “It's ridiculous, it's sumptuous, it's perfect summer sorbet.” Audience reviews echoed similar sentiments, with one viewer saying:
“It's literally the finest TV show I have ever watched. From the sumptuous scenes of Cornwall to the characters bulging with life and energy the show delivers at every turn.”
Complimenting the lead actor, the viewer added: “Aidan Turner is a dream casting as the venerable Ross Poldark who is charmingly human, fraught with failing and as one of the best
protagonists I have ever seen. Debbie Horsfield writes the scenes with skill and sensitivity. The direction is consistent and seems to provide a level of satisfaction that a viewer will not
be prepared for.” Another audience review said: “Poldark has everything I look for in a TV series: great characters, adventure, drama, joy, romance, inspiration, and feel good moments. The
acting and the story are not exaggerated like in a soap opera.” While one viewer said: “Got hooked quick. The characters are so well casted that they jump out at you and are so believable.
Each episode is a roller coaster and twists and turns here and there. Funny in spots and sad in others . It's a fun ride.” Another added: “I love and adore this series. Eleanor
Tomlinson is an extremely gifted Actress, incredibly talented.” _POLDARK IS AVAILABLE TO STREAM ON NETFLIX AND BBC IPLAYER._
