Join us on WhatsAppHeavy showers and thunderstorms are set to batter Surrey with delays on the roads expected. It comes as the Met Office has issued a nine-hour yellow weather warning which covers all of the
county.
The warning is in place from 9am on Saturday (June 7) until 6pm and could see frequent lightning, hail and strong, gusty winds. There could be 10-15mm of rainfall in less than an hour, while
some places could see 30-40mm of rain from successive showers and thunderstorms.
This could lead to some disruption to transport and infrastructure, the weather experts say. Forecasts suggest heavy rain throughout Saturday, with temperatures dropping to around 12C which
is unseasonably chilly for a weekend in June.
Rain may hit as early as 11pm on Friday night (June 6), with storms likely to be in full swing by around 2am. Heavy rain is then set to fall from 1am until around 4am, growing lighter by
sunrise.
Saturday morning is expected to remain grey and gloomy, with highs of 11C. Wind gusts are forecast to pick up between 10am and 7pm.
From 10am, rainfall could become heavier, with gusts hitting up to 28 miles per hour. The remainder of Saturday appears to be overcast with drizzle.
The rest of the weekend could be an improvement in comparison, with sunny spells and highs of around 17C on Sunday.
What to expect on Saturday According to the Met Office, there is agood chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus Probably some damage to a few buildings and structures
from lightning strikes Delays to train services are possible And some short-term loss of power and other services is likely
The weather experts added: "Frequent heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected for much of Saturday before fading from the west during the mid to late afternoon. 10-15mm of rain could
fall in less than an hour, whilst some places could see 30-40mm of rain over several hours from successive showers and thunderstorms. Frequent lightning, hail and strong, gusty winds will be
additional hazards."
Staying safe during a stormThe Met Office has advised the public that there is a medium likelihood of storm severity, with a potentially low impact. Weather warnings and forecasts can change quickly, so preparation is
key.
Here's the current advice:
Check your location for risk of flash flooding and have a flood plan and emergency kit in place Avoid delays by checking road, rail, air and seaconditions before travelling. Consider timetables before heading out Power cuts could impact homes and businesses so make sure to have torches, batteries and a mobile phone power bank Take
cover from thunder and lightning by getting into an enclosed shelter like a building or car. Do not shelter under trees and take lower ground When driving take main roads which may be less
likely to be affected by debris, flooding and branches Grip steering wheels firmly while driving and give large, high sided vehicles a wide berth
