Train lines were blocked and passengers faced hours of disruption following an incident on Wednesday morning (May 14) after a lorry carrying skips hit a bridge near a Surrey village.

Southern Rail announced just before 10am that a lorry had collided with a bridge between Oxted and East Grinstead, which left trains at a standstill while safety checks were carried out.

Lines between Oxted and East Grinstead did not reopen until just before 2pm, with services at stations in Lingfield, Dormans, and East Grinstead all being paused while rail replacement buses

were provided. Engineers arrived at the bridge on Racecourse Road between Lingfield and Dormansland at around 11am. A spokesperson for Southern Rail said: "Whilst a crane is used to

remove the skips, all lines have been blocked again to ensure everyone's safety. [Passengers] will now need to use an alternative route between Oxted and East Grinstead once more and

your journey time could take 30 minutes longer." After the train lines reopened the spokesperson added: "You will no longer need to use an alternative route to complete your

journey, however, please continue to allow additional time to travel as some trains remain cancelled."
