It's got a very rare rating of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, ranking it among the greatest films ever made. In fact, in a list of the 300 best films of all time on that website, it comes
just ahead of such massive hits as Casino Royale, Unforgiven, Pulp Fiction and Halloween. It's also widely lauded by critics, who say it is "masterfully done", "deeply
intelligent" and has individual performances "that few movies matched". One said: "It’s a movie that will live with me for a long time." Despite this, there's
every chance you've never heard of Leave No Trace, which was released in 2018 with little fanfare, no big name stars and made just £5m at the box office. WHAT IS LEAVE NO TRACE ABOUT?
The film is about an army veteran father and his 13-year-old daughter who "live a perfect but mysterious existence in... a beautiful nature reserve near Portland, Oregon, rarely making
contact with the world". They have a secret camp with a tent where they cook by fire and read books. But when one of them is spotted by a hiker things take a wrong turn. IS LEAVE NO
TRACE BASED ON A TRUE STORY? Although the film does not precisely follow real-life events, it is said to be based on the story of a real-life father and daughter who had been living together
for years in a campsite that went undetected in Portland's Forest Park until 2004. According to a report in The Oregonian newspaper in 2004, police in Portland received a call from a
cross-country runner about "suspicious people" in the park, described as "an older man with bushy white hair and a beard and a young girl in a remote part of the park"
who "looked as though they'd been camping there for a long time". It went on: "After an extensive search, police located the pair the next day hiding a short distance
from an elaborate camp dug into a steep hillside. Under a tarp-covered, wood-framed shelter, they found sleeping bags, a partially burnt log, a stack of old World Book Encyclopedias, rakes
and other tools. A rope swing, a tilled vegetable garden and a small creek were nearby. "The man and girl told police they had lived in the park for four years. Police were amazed to
find them clean, well-fed and healthy. They said the 12-year-old girl was well-spoken beyond her years." WHAT IS THE CAST OF LEAVE NO TRACE? The dad and daughter are played by Ben
Foster and Thomasin McKenzie in a film directed by Debra Granik, who, again, is not a widely-known director despite being called "exceptional" by Guardian film reviewer Peter
Bradshaw and having launched the career of Jennifer Lawrence in an earlier film. The New York Times says of the two stars: "Neither actor begs for your heart, but each — like this movie
— takes it." And it says of director Ms Granik: "She looks hard and by looking encourages us to see the beauty — and meaning — in the everyday". WHAT DO PEOPLE SAY ABOUT
LEAVE NO TRACE? Leave No Trace has a remarkable 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a reviews aggregator, making it one of few films with a perfect rating on the site alongside the likes of
Seven Samurai and 12 Angry Men. The Guardian film critic says it's a "deeply intelligent, complex, finely tuned and observed movie". Brian Eggert of Deep Focus Review says the
director "brilliantly delivers the viewer into the characters' spatially and socially secluded world, making otherwise normal, crowded living environments seem oppressive and even
dangerous by comparison". Famous British film critic Mark Kermode named it as the best film of 2018. WHERE CAN I WATCH LEAVE NO TRACE? Leave No Trace is streaming on Netflix free with
a subscription and can be rented on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and YouTube.
