World news story BRITISH HIGH COMMISSIONER TANZANIA'S STATEMENT ON ACID ATTACK ON TWO BRITISH GIRLS IN ZANZIBAR British High Commissioner Dianna Melrose, on Tuesday August 13, commented

on the acid attack in Stone Town, Zanzibar on August 7 which left two British nationals injured. This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition

government Speaking following the incident, she said: > It was a shocking attack and our thoughts and sympathy go out to the > young women and their families. We wish them a speedy

recovery and > will continue to do all we can to support them. > I would like to thank the Governments of Tanzania and Zanzibar for > their public condemnation of the attack and

their stated > determination to leave no stone unturned in finding the > perpetrators, and ensuring they are brought to justice. This will > reassure British tourists planning to

travel to the island. > Pending police investigations, it would be unwise to leap to > conclusions about the motive for the attack or what it means for > foreign visitors.

Nevertheless, we have updated our Travel Advice to > inform people of the attack and reiterate the need for caution. The British High Commission provided consular assistance to the girls

and their families, including facilitating the victims’ flight from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam, supporting them while in hospital in Dar Es Salaam and liaising with the insurance company over

their medical evacuation. Zanzibar remains a popular tourist destination and most visits are trouble free. British nationals are however encouraged to take care and to read our Travel
