A meeting on Friday discussed creation of road safety fund , improvement of road safety markings points, elimination of black spots, lighting of road sides, establishment and auditing of
trauma care centers and marking and signage at accident-prone places. The meeting also discussed road safety audit, speed calmingmeasures, violation of Ribbon Development Act, using of
reflectors at checkingpoints, reservation of seats for women and handicap persons in buses andminibuses, checking of charging arbitrary passenger fares, measures to evadetraffic congestion
points like schools and market areas. The District Road Safety Committee meeting was chaired bydistrict development commissioner Abid Rashid Shah who is also the chairman ofCommittee.
Separate Special Investigation Tribunals were constitutedfor Pulwama and Awantipora police districts.The mandate of the SITs will be toascertain the details of the accidents happened in the
last five years so thatthe research methodology could help in identifying the common cause ofaccidents along with vulnerability mapping of accidents prone areas. The SIT meeting every month
would decide the policy tominimise and avert road accidents. The SITs will be headed by respective deputysuperintendents (Hqr) of the police districts, having assistant engineerR&B,
motor vehicle inspectors and an official from traffic police as itsmembers. The DC also ordered that licences of the drivers caughtusing mobile phone while driving would be punched in the
first and secondinstances but cancelled if caught third time. He called for taking effective measures to curb traffic jamincluding removal of encroachments from the footpaths. He directed
theassistant regional transport officer to ensure better traffic management in thedistrict to avoid traffic jams in town. Municipal Committee authorities wereinstructed to remove vendors
from road sides and footpaths particularly in thetown.
