French actress Isabelle Adjani filed a $22-million lawsuit against Time magazine, claiming the weekly news magazine used an unauthorized likeness of her in an advertisement promoting the
magazine’s appeal to modern women. The actress, winner of numerous international awards for roles in such films as “Story of Adele H.,” “Quartet” and “Possession,” said she has been offered
“substantial sums” for endorsements in the past, but has so far declined. The Time ad, which appeared in the New York Times and Women’s Wear Daily, among other publications, includes a
photograph of Adjani with the text, “She means business. On top of the world. On top of the issues . . . She’s the Time reader . . .” Her Los Angeles Superior Court suit said she “is not a
subscriber or regular reader of Time magazine, does not endorse that magazine, or find it something new ‘to excite her’ or that it contains ‘all that matters’ to her.” Lawyers for Time Inc.
